Basra Gas Company

The Basrah Gas Company is revitalising and expanding southern Iraq's gas infrastructure to capture currently flared gas in order to boost Iraq's energy independence and enhance economic diversification through exports. BGC requires a high quality and cost effective solution to secure the safety of hundreds of staff, contractors and clients as they realise Iraq’s largest ever gas project.
Basra Gas Company

background

Formed in May 2013, BGC is a public/private joint venture, unique in Iraq and comprises the South Gas Company, the majority shareholder, Shell and Mitsubishi. The project operates throughout the south east of Iraq, west of Basrah and south to Umm Qasr including the Zubayr river/Canal. Due to the large geographical area and cross concession working BGC has set some of the highest safety requirements in Iraq.

Since January 2016 has provided mobile security in the form of Private Security Detail (PSD) to BGC staff and their contractor personnel, on a 24/7 availability pattern. This has included the provision of more than 150 vehicles and 480 security staff at periods of peak demand.

Outcome

Over the life of the project, we have carried more than 390,000 clients safely prioritising the safety and security of our clients, employees and the communities living around them.

G4S has driven BGC employees in excess of 19,500,000 km - the equivalent of over 20 return journeys to the moon or 480 times around the world - with no major incidents. These figures equate to working an exposed time of over 450,000 hours without major incident. Such statistics are testament to both the high levels of health safety and security required by BGC and also the ability of G4S to meet them without fail every day for over four years.

Our staff are the reason the project is successful, both Iraqi and international employees have worked together to ensure that BGC are moved safely and securely.

Every movement for the duration of this contract has been undertaken by highly trained and well equipped PSD teams, controlled from a number of operations rooms spread across the south of Iraq. Our team leaders are carefully screened and come with some of the highest levels of experience required for any contract in Iraq. We use a fleet of over 150 BGC compliant vehicles in Iraq utilising a Toyota Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) standard and international Oil Company approved maintenance capability in Iraq. Every vehicle undergoes a set refurbishment program as well as servicing at each 5,000 km.

We have utilised a variety of vehicles to exactly suit the client’s needs, ranging from soft skin pickups to Armoured Landcruisers all the way to Ashok Buses

We have transport over 10,000 clients every month. Our priority is the safety and security of our clients, employees and the communities living around them.

Each G4S employee undergoes an intensive security, road safety and defensive driving training package to ensure the safety and satisfaction of our clients. We have conducted over 44,000 tool box talks / safety briefs and passed in excess of 700 BGC audits.

In addition to working directly for BGC we also provide services to a number of their subcontractors, these include both mobile and static security all of which is delivered in line with the exacting minimum security standards set by BGC.
